The Breton Stripe – Spring`s Staple Print

So what is a Breton stripe exactly? Well the print is made up of navy blue and white horizontal stripes and refers to the Brittany region of France. The traditional knitted shirt with long or three quarter length sleeves and boat neck was originally worn by French fisherman. It then quickly became a symbol of casual and chic fashion thanks to the fabulous Coco Chanel who had spotted the distinct and graphic look of the Breton stripe when visiting the French Riviera. The fashion icon would often wear a nautical top with high-waisted wide leg pants which is a look that, even now, never seems to go out of style.

The Breton stripe is definitely a spring/summer staple print which many women can rely on for classic wardrobe dressing in the lovely warm months. There is something lovely about nautical stripes; whether it is the versatility or classic feel of such an iconic pattern. Nearly every fashionista will have a Breton stripe t-shirt or piece of knitwear being proudly hung in their wardrobe ready to flaunt this spring; but don`t worry if you haven`t because there are plenty of pieces available from new collections to get your hands on to welcome in the new season.
