Shopping Liberation

Hi Chantelle
When I go shopping I tend to buy one or two items and not a whole outfit. They are stylish and fashionable by themselves but when it comes to putting a coordinated outfit together I get stuck. Any suggestions? Sarah Horn, Exeter - by email

My advice is to buy a capsule wardrobe which usually consists of about 5 items which are good quality, plain in colour and of a classic style. I would recommend a pair of jeans, a smart jacket, a casual jacket, smart trousers and skirt, this is a good basis to start from (denim is good place to start). Once you have these in place you can mix and match your fashionable items with each of your capsule wardrobe. By going for fairly plain key items, you can get away with wearing any colour and any style/fashionable pieces with them. For your capsule wardrobe I would look in places like French Connection, Reiss, Jigsaw, Diesel, Plum (in Exeter), House of Fraser, Debenhams and Gap, all these brands are a bit more expensive but well worth it because they last longer and wash well. Look at what styles are out at the moment and buy accordingly, maybe the garment has a small element in it, be subtle and less is more!

When choosing your fashionable items match the same tones with each other and use accessories to pull the outfit together, picking out a hint of colour in them to what your wearing.
