‘Make sure you wear a hood’, must be one of the top three phrases my mother has repeated to me over the years.  Of course it is not too much of a problem these days but hoods were not so hot in the nineties.

However I was not the only one of my friends to discover before a day out at a theme park this weekend that I did not in fact own one single waterproof coat, never mind one with a hood!  In a last minute panic I decided to ask my boyfriend if I could borrow one of his horrid work anoraks (at least I would be dry and could blame my lack of style on him) but they had all apparently mysteriously disappeared.  This whole situation resulted in the biggest fashion disaster I have been involved in for a long time, when half way through the day I was forced to accept my friend’s kind offer of a canary yellow Disney poncho.  You can imagine.  To be honest my friends did not fair that much better in their cagoules (well actually it was a LOT better than me, but still not good).

So what exactly is it that we are supposed to do when finding ourselves outdoors in the UK for prolonged periods of time?  Obviously everyone should arm themselves with a colourful designer umbrella collection but as far as sensible waterproof coats with hoods, I’m yet to find one I wish to call my own.

I have recently bought myself a rather nice smart winter coat.  I was trying to get through the winter without buying one, an attempt to save some money, but my last one had really seen the end of the road.  Simultaneously a good friend had taken some advice from her mother which included to always wear a smart coat, this had resulted in her scoring a fab new job, so I snapped up a gorgeous trench from Miss Selfridge with a full skirt.  They are doing a lovely lighter weight one for spring.  It is true I did feel much smarter in my new coat and it resulted in me feeling more confident, not a feeling you could get from a cag in bag methinks!

So with this in mind the need to find a sensible coat seems to have gone out the window as quickly as it arrived and I will be quite happy to return to my umbrella collection next time it rains.  By the way if you are looking for a new job, my friends mother also advises new shoes, lipstick and lip liner to go with your new coat!
