Hi Chantelle,

I am looking for a stunning, glitzy, not too revealing red (or any colour) dress for my 40th birthday. I am a happy size 14 and 5’10” tall - you would think it was easy, I have found nothing - any ideas?  All the fashion is really grundgy and I need something very classical.

I hope you can help a desperate “old bird”!

Thanks
Catherine

Hi Catherine,

Thank you so much for your email.

I know exactly what it’s like when you can’t find anything in the shops, especially when you really want and need something for a special occasion - it’s frustrating!

Most people think that a classical look is really easy to pull off but in fact it can be very tricky. When ladies reach a certain age they are very aware that they can’t necessarily wear what they could perhaps when they were in their 20’s. The phrase ‘mutton dressed as lamb’ is always mentioned when I’m out with my clients so I am always very cautious. It basically comes down to having everything right. By wearing the right colours for your skintone is an essential part of it and this really does enhance the whole look of an outfit. After establishing suitable colours you should then transfer this across to your make-up and by knowing how to accessorise properly creates your very own style!

I have found some gorgeous dresses which are classic dress shapes. Some are more daring then others but whilst looking at them think how you could accessorise to make them your own. A great tip is to accessorise with a pashmina which is great for cold evenings or for covering your arms and shoulders, this can be worn loose or you could actually secure it on (like a wrap) with a pretty brooch. When buying a completely new outfit you need to think about the overall look by accessorising using jewellery, scarves/pashminas, bags, decorative hair pieces, shoes and hoisery.

I hope I have given you some ideas, please give me a shout if you would like to venture out on a shopping day as mentioned in my email.
