Shopping is not a science but there are some effective rules that by sticking to will save you precious pounds. Why not try out some of these tips and see what effect it has on your bank balance at the end of each month. Girls, it’s time to get sensible and realise what clever shopping is all about!

Tip 1: When you next go shopping make sure that when you buy something that it goes with at least three other items in your wardrobe, you could potentially wear it for three different occasions with adaptations and that you can wear it over three seasons successfully.

Tip 2: Invest in some key accessories (necklaces, scarves, tights and belts) that will complement at least five different outfits in your wardrobe. Accessories can really enhance any outfit and also think about different ways of how they can be worn.

Tip 3: Look at current items in your wardrobe and today’s fashion. If you think an old suit jacket could be nip and tucked in at the waist to make it appear more flattering or updated with adding a bow or belt detail then take it to the tailors to refresh it’s look. Refresh an old jumper by making it into a versatile tank top or add a beautiful ribbon bow to update a little black dress.

Tip 4: Instead of hiring a personal stylist you can find out what items suit your body shape and what colours you should be wearing by signing up to iStylista. For just £30 you can download your very own personalised Style Goddess style guide.

Tip 5: Get clever and think ahead to the seasonal sales. Shop around for items that you want to buy make a list of the price, correct size and where they’re from (retailer) and then the sales come round your ready to hit the sales when they appear. You won’t even have to try the item on. Just BUY and GO. The longer the list the more choice you’ll have of buying in the sale.

Tip 6: Shop around on eBay. If you can think of something that you desperately wanted in the sales a few seasons ago but missed out it’s worth trawling through the pages on eBay. There are loads of last season items up for grabs and as long as you stick to the three items, three seasons rule then go for it!

Tip 7: Designer sample sales crop up everywhere so it’s definitely worth popping along to pick up a bargain. Some sales can often offer up to 75% off! Fashion Confidential is a great source.

READER COMMENTS:

great tips! might i add:

1) consignment stores--trade your gently used yet trendy clothes for store credit. i’ve gotten designer shoes, trendy/classic tops and fun dresses practically free! it takes luck, but the hunt is fun (if you’re not tired/stressed/in a rush).

2) gift cards--use department store gift cards during peak season sales for best value...also free!
