Hi Chantelle
I would really like to wear a fitted shirt occasionally to work but unfortunately they always seem to gape, which leaves me slightly paranoid that I am drawing unnecessary attention to that area. Any tips for getting away with this? Joanne, Reigate - by email

There are other alternatives to having a classic buttoned-up fitted shirt. I would suggest the following as good options for you to look out for;

1. Tunic style shirt - this type of shirt is good because you can slip it over your head so therefore no fastenings or gaping! I have spotted a lovely one on the Topshop website - Linen Granddad Tie Tunic Top (Linen tunic with a granddad style collar a v neck detail and a tie at the waist. It is 100% linen and is machine washable. This item is available in grey. £25)

2. Asymmetric button fastening - this type of fastening goes diagonally across the chest rather than straight up the middle so won’t gape in that area. I don’t think this type of shirt is easy to come by so just bear it mind when out shopping or surfing the net. While surfing the web today I found a smart, classic looking shirt which would be perfect for wearing to work - visit la redoute - Ruched shirt (THE SHIRT FOR WINTER 05/06!! Never short of ideas, this time the shirt has got plenty up its sleeve making it impossible to resist! Introducing the new shirt in a choice of 7 colours (including 1 stripe) at an all-too tempting price. A new, very flattering look with mock asymmetric button fastening, accentuated by metal press-studs for a contemporary twist and gathers for a feminine edge. Open shirt collar, long sleeves with press-stud fastening cuffs and concealed side zip. Length approx. 60 cm. 100% cotton poplin. Available in Beige, Black, Clover, Pink, Sky blue, White and Pink stripe. £9)

3. Concealed fastening - this is another great fastening design where the buttons are concealed. Because there are esentially two layers of fabric covering you up at the front there is less chance of gaps appearing. Have a look at this one on la redoute - SOFT GREY New shirt - plain (Military-style collar, little pin tucks which become loose pleats. Matching buttons under placket, slightly gathered sleeves, detachable velour tie at the waist. SOFT GREY detail: a “Grandad-style” neckline suddenly looks terribly young! Length 62 cm. 100% cotton voile. Available in Black, Ivory and Bright green. Was £21. Sale price £14.70)
