Move out of the way Christian Louboutin and Jimmy Choo (but don’t go too far!) as there is a new shoe trend in town!  Say hello to Worishofers – a clog designed for bunion sufferers but now a hot must-have in the celebrity world.

This sandal definitely puts function and practicality before fashion (although I don’t think they’re all that bad to look at) and actresses such as Maggie Gyllenhaal and Kirsten Dunst have been spotted wearing them.  Being dubbed ‘bunion shoes’ these cork sole wedged sandals, made for ladies who suffer from aching feet, have risen in popularity over the last couple of years.  Featuring a contoured insole designed for maximum comfort they are named after the Bavarian spa town where they are made – Bad Worishofen.

These Worishofers come in several designs and colours to suit your style but never stray too far from their original purpose.  Designed by a German podiatrist in the mid 20th century they are perfect for women on the go and if celebs are jumping on board this sandal wagon then why can’t the rest of us!  Even famous feet must tire of wearing all those stiletto heels…

Retailing for about £40 in America, which is rather reasonable, these shoes are displayed in boutiques in trendy corners of New York.  Unfortunately they’re not yet available in Britain but I guarantee it won’t be long until they become a craze over here!

Now this isn’t the first time that a shoe has become popular due to its practicality.  We’ve all heard of crocs and UGG boots (my go to shoes in the winter!) which we tend to see everywhere here in the UK.  A lot of people just prefer comfort when going about their everyday duties.

Paul Weitman, of US based Laurevan shoes, has sold Worishofers for an impressive 26 years but said in the past two, sales of this adorable sandal have risen 50%.  He comments –

“Younger women have really started getting interested in the shoes.  My daughter is 28 and my wife is 56, but both wear them. They have just caught on and I can’t explain it.”

A British podiatrist, Beverley Ashdown, said the sandals look similar to some that have been designed with orthopedic aims.  She said –

“An open sandal is better for foot health, and natural fabrics allow the foot to breathe.”

So what do we think ladies?  A fashion must-have or a fashion no-no?  We will have to just wait and see if women give up the glamour of killer heels for a less fashionable but healthier shoe.
